It is also with great pleasure that we want to take a look at the winner of The Voice Nigeria season 1- A’rese as revealed by the show’s official site
A Look At The The Voice Nigeria Season 1 Winner
Even before claiming victory, the 29-year old theatre actress was not new to the music scene. She comes from a family that is into creative art and she’s been performing in stage productions since she graduated from Washington and Lee University in 2010.
It’s no wonder therefore that A’rese has scored one acting role after another since winning The Voice Nigeria from Tinsel to her starring role as Senami on Jemeji. She also released a video for her single, ‘Uwe No’ in February this year and much like the song, the picturesque offering is serene and soothing.
Her soulful vocals on ‘Uwe No’ also bring back fond memories of her iconic victory during last season’s finale and the brilliant performance which won her the hearts of millions watching.
Dressed in African inspired outfits for the night, she gave a heartfelt rendition of Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” and “bagged” the inaugural The Voice Nigeria title. Her Coach Waje was in tears after her performance and described her as “unique” and “a once-in-a-generation voice”.
A’rese, whose real name is Agharese Emokpae, was up against her own Team’s Patrick, #TeamPatoranking’s Nonso Bassey and Chike, #TeamTimi’s Dewe’ and Cornel, as well as #Team2Baba’s Brenda and Viveeyan at the initial stage of the Season Finale. She sang Fela Kuti’s “When Trouble Sleeps.”
After the final round of performances, it all came down to her, Chike from #TeamPatoranking, Cornel from #TeamTimi and Brenda from #Team2Baba. When IK revealed that she’d won she was visibly shaken and in complete disbelief while Waje beamed with excitement . Rightly so too as it was no easy feat reaching this stage and beating out many talented singers who appeared during the Blind Auditions and Battle stages of the completion.

How The Game is Played
The Blind Auditions:
The show starts with the Blind Auditions. In this stage the coaches, all noteworthy performing artists, have their chairs faced away from the stage as the contestant sings. The coaches have the duration of the contestant’s performance(90 seconds) to decide whether they want the contestant on their team and turn. If one coach turns, the contestant defaults to that coach but if more than one coach turns, the contestant has to choose who he/she wants to work with. In the end of the blind auditions, each coach will have twelve “Talents” on their teams.
The Battle Rounds:
The next stage is the battle rounds. In this stage, the coaches pair their talents in twos and give each pair a song to perform. After the performance, the coach chooses one to advance while the other goes home, or is stolen by another coach. Each coach has two steals. The coaches advance with eight talents each at the end of the battle rounds.
The Live Shows:
After the battle rounds comes the Live Shows. In this stage, each of the talents perform a song given by their coach, and the coach saves one out of every four talents while the rest are left to public votes. Public votes save one talent out of each team every week while the rest are evicted. The talents are cut from 32 to 16 to 12 to 8 of them who qualify for the finals. From the Top 8, the winner and runner-up are decided by the public votes.
The Voice Nigeria Coaches:
* 2baba (now replaced by Yemi)
* Timi Dakolo
